What is a Percentage?
Think of a percentage as simply a fraction out of 100. It’s a way to show how a specific part relates to the whole. Whenever you see the % symbol, you can read it as "out of one hundred."
For example, if you get an 85% on a test, that means if the test had exactly 100 questions, you got 85 of them right. You can also write 85% as the decimal 0.85 or the fraction 85/100.
To find a percentage yourself, you just take the part, divide it by the whole, and multiply by 100.
Example: If 12 players on a 30-person soccer team are freshmen, you calculate 12 ÷ 30 = 0.4. Multiply 0.4 by 100, and you get 40%. So, 40% of the team are freshmen!
The Basic Percentage Formula
At its core, almost all percentage math uses a simple equation with three parts:
Percentage × Whole = Part

Example: What is 5% of 40? Since 5% is 0.05 as a decimal, the formula is: 0.05 × 40 = 2. The part is 2.
Percentage Difference
Sometimes you need to compare two numbers to see how different they are from each other, without one being the "original" starting number. To do this, you find the difference between the two numbers, and divide it by their average.
Percentage Difference = |Number 1 - Number 2| ÷ Average × 100
Example: Finding the percentage difference between 20 and 30.
1. Difference: |20 - 30| = 10
2. Average: (20 + 30) ÷ 2 = 25
3. Calculation: 10 ÷ 25 = 0.4. Multiply by 100 to get a 40% difference.
Percentage Change (Increase or Decrease)
This is super common in real life—like when a store marks up the price of sneakers, or puts them on sale. Percentage change looks at how much a single number went up or down compared to its original starting point.
Example: 200 increased by 15%
First, turn 15% into a decimal (0.15). To increase the original amount, multiply it by 1 + 0.15 (which is 1.15).
200 × 1.15 = 230
Example: 200 decreased by 15%
To decrease the original amount, subtract the decimal from 1: 1 - 0.15 = 0.85.
200 × 0.85 = 170
